OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition. It’s the method used to convert what is really a picture of text, such as a fax received by your fax modem or a scanned-in page of text, into "live" text that behaves as though it had been typed in, and can be edited, spell checked, copied into other documents, etc. This can either be done by a separate OCR program, or can be a built-in feature of the program that controls your fax modem or scanner.
